Al Lopez was one of the earliest catchers in the game to have a direct impact on the teams he played for. His durability was legendary as he set the mark of 1,918 straight games catching until Bob Boone and Carlton Fisk broke the record decades later. Lopez started playing professional baseball in 1930 and ended up playing 18 years. Al Lopez's statistics speak for themselves in terms of longevity and strength.
Al passed away from a heat attack on October 20, 2005 in Tampa, Florida. With Al's passing that means that at 88 years of age becomes the oldest baseball hall of famer. Phil started his career in 1941 with the Yankees and retired from baseball in 1956. He was elected to the baseball hall of fame by Veterans Committee in 1994. |
