The World Cup is supposed to bring the best in soccer from the around the world together in the ultimate championship. It's held only every four years, and to the fans it can be very exciting. Some of that excitement has really splashed onto the players. They are playing harder, dirtier and floppier than before. In the second round match that pitted Portugal against the Netherlands, there was a record setting four red cards in one match. Let me repeat that. The new record for red cards in world cup matches games is four red cards. Amazing. A red card occurs when a player receives either two yellow cards or commits a foul so outrageous they are sent off. They should be rare occurrences, but in this game it was outrageous. Sometimes a referee will pull out a red card too quickly, but the referee in this match couldn't pull them quick enough. Would you believe that the nation's leading men's NCAA soccer scorer came from Campbell University? Located in the heart of college soccer country, North Carolina, Campbell University has a great tradition of good soccer. Willy Guadarrama is a sophomore forward on the team and ended the 2005 season with 20 goals, which was good enough to snag player of the year honors in the Atlantic Sun conference. He also added 4 assists for a total of 44 points. He broke an 11 year record at Campbell University by scoring 5 goals in a game against Stetson on October 6, 2005. That was spurred by his parents making a special trip into town from Texas to see him. The 5 goal tally was the most of any NCAA player this year in a single game. But he didn't stop there, Willy also set a Campbell University record for quickest goal, 26 seconds, and fastest hat trick in 32 minutes. |
