John Reaves' collegiate debut was auspicious - to say the least. In his first varsity appearance on September 20, 1969, Florida's Reaves fired five touchdown passes - four in the first half as the Gators amassed a 38-6 lead - and sparked his team to a 59-34 victory over the Houston Cougars in Gainesville, Fla. Reaves, a sophomore quarterback, completed 18 of 30 passes for 342 yards. Carlos Alvarez. On the third play of the game, the Gators' Alvarez, also a sophomore, made his first collegiate reception - and it went for a touchdown.

Reaves was on the throwing end of the 70-yard pass play. The Reaves-Alvarez combination also clicked on a 21-yard TD pass in the second quarter, accounting for Reaves' third touchdown aerial of the afternoon. Ken Bailey. Houston senior quarterback who threw for all five of the Cougars' touchdowns, hitting Elmo Wright three times on scoring passes and Mike Parrott twice. Four of Bailey's TD passes were in the second half.

Tommy Durrance. Florida running back who caught Reaves' fourth and fifth scoring passes of the day, a 46-yarder in the second quarter and a three-yarder in the third period.Garry Walker. Fullback who scored on Reaves' second touchdown pass, a two-yard pitch in the first quarter.
