San Diego State, riding a record passing performance by Dennis Shaw, overwhelmed New Mexico State, 70-21, on November 15, 1969, in San Diego. Shaw hurled nine touchdown passes - unprecedented in major-college history - for Coach Don Coryell's Aztecs, who bolted to a 49-14 halftime lead over the Aggies. Shaw, completing 26 of 42 passes overall for 441 yards and combining with only two receivers during his TD onslaught, tossed seven of his scoring passes in the first half.

After a scoreless third quarter in which he yielded interceptions on three straight possessions, Shaw came back to pitch two more TD passes in the final quarter. Phil Corley. New Mexico State player whose four-yard scoring reception with 32 seconds left in the game capped a touchdown binge in which all 13 of the game's TDs were scored on pass plays. Tim Delaney. He caught six of Shaw's touchdown passes, establishing a major-college record for scoring receptions in one game. Delaney hauled in TD passes of two and 22 yards in the first quarter, 34 and 31 yards in the second quarter and 30 and nine yards in the fourth quarter.

Delaney totaled 275 yards in receptions. Rhett Putman. New Mexico State quarterback who threw for three touchdowns. Tom Reynolds. Aztecs receiver who had only four catches in the game but scored on three of them. Reynolds and Shaw combined for the game's first touchdown on a 14-yard play in the first quarter and then accounted for the final two TDs of the first half on 33- and seven-yard pass plays in the second quarter. Brian Sipe. Reserve San Diego State quarterback who teamed with Eugene Carter on a 28-yard scoring pass in the fourth quarter. Sipe's TD pass was sandwiched between Shaw's eighth and ninth touchdown passes.
