Southern California's Anthony Davis put on one of college football's most stirring offensive displays on December 2, 1972, scoring six touchdowns as the Trojans drubbed Notre Dame, 45-23, at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The sophomore tailback collected his first and fifth TDs in dramatic fashion. Davis took the game's opening kickoff and sprinted 97 yards for a score; then, after Southern Cal's lead had been reduced to 25-23, he went 96 yards on a kickoff return late in the third period.

Davis, whose 22 rushes against the Fighting Irish netted 99 yards, also scored on one- and five-yard runs in the first quarter, a four-yard thrust in the third period and an eight-yard dash in the final quarter. Tom Clements.

Quarterback who rallied the Irish within two points of the Trojans after Notre Dame had fallen behind by 19-3 and 25-10 scores. He hit Willie Townsend on a five-yard scoring pass in the second quarter, found Gary Diminick on an 11-yard touchdown pitch in the third period and, with USC ahead, 25-17, teamed with Mike Creaney on a 10-yard TD pass with 1 minute, 19 seconds left in the third quarter. Bob Thomas accounted for Notre Dame's other points with a 45-yard field goal in the first quarter and two conversion kicks.

Sam Cunningham. Trojan fullback who threw key blocks for Davis on his TD runs from scrimmage and tallied the last points of the game on a one-yard TD burst in the fourth period. In the 1974 Southern Cal-Notre Dame game in Los Angeles, senior tailback Davis scored four touchdowns - one on a kickoff return - as the Trojans roared from behind to batter the Irish, 55-24.
